Necessity is the mother of invention

October 31, 2018

I was in Indonesia with photographer Hugh Hunter of Hunter Films. We were sailing from the island of Bali to Komodo Island across the Flores Sea. We were shooting photos of the 110-ft ketch, Adelaar. (That's German for "eagle.") This classic yacht was to be International Expedition's exclusive vessel for luxury nature voyages. Hugh Hunter was capturing fabulous images of the accommodations aboard the ship and the spectacular scenery of the Indonesian archipelago. But the project could not be complete without aerial photos of the ship. (Our shoot predated the availability of drones.) There were no light planes to charter at our base in Bali. A solution lied somewhere. Suddenly it dawned on me...we needed to send Hugh aloft in a parasail.  We found a parasailing outfitter in the tourist center of  Bali, Denpasar. Hugh snapped stunning aerial pictures of Adelaar as she sailed past a primitive fishing village on one of the out islands. Our biggest challenge was getting Hugh back on the boat without drenching his expensive camera equipment.  It was a close call, but we did it. The rest is history.  The Adelaar became a profitable expedition for International Expeditions.
